Callejón Z is one of the most emblematic corners of Petare, with a history going back to the town's earliest years. This path, which originally connected the lower part of town with the top of the hill, was key to the area's urban development. In this article we explore how it was built, how it evolved and its historical importance as Petare's Camino Real (royal road), as well as the legacy it has left to this day.

History of Callejón Z

Callejón Z dates back to the first years after the founding of Petare, when the authorities and residents decided to build a road connecting the town from its lower part to the top. The route started from what would later become the Plaza Principal (main square) and ran down to the Caurimare River.

Building the road

Construction began on the banks of the Caurimare River, in an area known as Zorrocloco, behind what is today the Pérez de León Hospital. From there a route was opened towards the Las Tunitas bridge, where the climb up to the town began. Rocks were removed from the hillside and the ground was plowed, creating a winding path that led to the main square. The result was a zigzagging road that formed a curious "Z".

Urban development and the meaning of the Camino Real

Over time, residents asked for permission to build their houses on both sides of the new road, which quickly urbanized it. Known as Petare's Camino Real, the route became the town's main access for many years, used by pedestrians, riders and pack animals despite its steep climb.

Callejón Z today

Although the Camino Real is no longer the main access route, the row of houses and the remains of the old cobblestone road make up what is known today as Callejón Z, a historic relic that is still part of Petare's cultural identity.
